The 2014 NBA Combine was this past week in Chicago, Illinois. Some of the very best showed up from all over the world to show off their talents to hundreds of scouts, coaches, and General Managers. This is a make or break situation. This will decide whether or not you are a first rounder, or a second rounder, and whether you get drafted at all. The physical skills are important. You have to be able to shoot, dribble, rebound, pass and play defense among many more things. If you do not have the physical tools, you will not survive. Different sport, but this quote from Yogi Berra relates to every sport.
“90% of the game is half mental.”
Have truer words ever been spoken? So while many think that to succeed in the NBA, all you need is the physical aspect, they are wrong. You need the mental game, and more importantly, how to handle yourself off the court. During the combine, teams interview the prospective athletes and grill them with questions. Houston Rockets GM Daryl Morey decided to tweet out what he thought were some classis answers. He did not throw any of the kids under the bus, he just wanted to show us all how dumb these kids really are.
That is some great stuff. Nothing better than showing up to the combine under the influence and trying to get your vertical jump over 40 inches. I wonder if LeBron showed up high during his combine? I just hope Morey does not get in trouble for exposing some answers. What would be even better if the players who answered those questions came out and admitted it on twitter. Classic!
