Well that is it. Just as everyone in Buffalo was jumping on the UB men’s basketball team bandwagon, they are about to jump off. But not me. Been a season ticket hold for 3 seasons, and even though this was an awful game by both teams, I will renew for next season, casue they are only going to get better. Now back to the game.
It was the first time EVER UB has been in the NCAA tournament…EVER! The two seniors have never been here before, and you have a freshman point guard who played like a freshman. It is what it is. The lights were to big and they couldn’t convert when needed. The first half was atrocious. Turnover city. Missed lay ups, and I don’t know what you want to call Lamonte Bearden’s lay up/alley oop off the back board.
The second half was a better game. The Bulls cut it down to 3 and even tied it but that never took the lead. Like I mentioned before, missed lay ups and free throws down the stretch killed this team. The Bulls went 6-16 from three point land. Not bad, but not great, especially when Jarryn Skeete can’t hit one. They did not get crushed on the boards like some predicted, but what killed them was the 11 turnovers in the first half. They finished with 17 for the game, but just bad passes in the first half led to some Mountaineer runs.
Also, was it me or were the refs calling everything. UB was shooting free throws with 13 minutes remaining in the first half. I know WVU fouls a lot but damn, let the kids play. Kids…
The Bulls lose Will Regan and Xavier Ford. What two opposite careers. Regan comes in from Virginia, plays well early on in his career and then just shits the bed. Pretty much just a 3 points shooter as he has no athletic skills, the Nichols graduate shot 30% from deep, the worst percentage of his career. To add onto that, his rebound total decreased as well.
Next year should be very exciting. The Bulls return MAC POY in Justin Moss, All MAC second teamer Shannon Evans, and a MAC all freshman in Lamonte Bearden. They also receive the services of 6’8″ shooter Nate Navigato. Same size as Regan but a better athlete. Will help stretch the floor for Moss down low. Nick Perkins a true four man hails from Milan, Michigan, reminds me of Javon McCrea. An undersized big man, who shoots lefty and is quite athletic for his size.
The Bulls also locked up a JUCO shooting guard who was a 4 star recruit coming out of high school in Maurice O’Field. Another guard to add to the mix. This freakishly athletic guard should add even more excitement to Alumni Arena along with Evans and Moss. Jarryn Skeete may see his minutes go down after all these signings. The fourth recruit coming to AA is Torian Graham. A Joshua Freelove situation, Graham has one year of eligibility remaining after transferring from Houston. Bulls assistant coach Levi Watkins was on the NC State Wolfpack staff when Graham committed to NC State.
