When reality infringes on the sporting world in the form of a major storm like Hurricane Matthew, we are reminded that the games we love become secondary. With that being said, sports are also a release, and a distraction for those going through difficult times. Today is one of those days that can people in the south east can use as a distraction. Here are fives games you need to watch today!
#9 Tennessee @ #7 Texas A&M (CBS – 3:30pm EST)
While this is not exactly an elimination game, a win definitely helps your chances more as both the Volunteers and Aggies still have to take on Alabama. After a thrilling comeback last Saturday against Georgia, Joshua Dobbs and Tennessee need to get off to a solid start in the first half. Look for Trevor Knight to use his feet in this match up. Knight is leading the Aggies offense to almost 40 points per game.
Virginia Tech @ #16 North Carolina (ABC/ESPN2 – 3:30pm EST)
The Heels are returning home after defeating the Seminoles in Tallahassee on a last second field goal. That victory has brought some attention to the Coastal Division of this conference. Since their loss to Tennessee at Bristol Motor Speedway, the Hokies have quietly taken care of business, shutting out Boston College 49-0, and then a 54-17 victory over East Carolina. Carolina has been on the cusp the last couple of seasons. If they want to be a contender, they need to win this game.
#1 Alabama @ #17 Arkansas (ESPN – 7pm EST)
If the Tide seemed disinterested in last weeks match up against Kentucky, it’s probably because they were. They have a rough three game stretch, all on the road with the first game against the Razorbacks. Arkansas is already behind the eight ball with a loss to Texas A&M but an upset win over Nick Saban and company puts them right back in the mix. Look for Lane Kiffin to get freshman quarterback Jalen Hurts off to a fast start on the road.
#6 Washington @ Oregon (FOX – 7:30pm EST)
The Huskies are coming off their biggest win since Chris Peterson took over as head coach. Unfortunately this week is a no win situation for Washington. A win over the Ducks will be nice, but it will not move the needle as far as helping their playoff resume. A loss on the other hand would be devastating not only for Washington, but the for Pac-12 as well and any other team that has aspirations of making it into the final four.
#21 Florida State @ #10 Miami (ABC – 8pm EST)
While the greater Miami area has more pressing concerns, this game can be a nice escape for a couple of hours. The Miami Hurricanes are currently 4-0, and are looking for their first 10 plus win season since 2003, their last season in the Big East. Mark Richt has flipped a switch, and with the strong play from junior quarterback Brad Kaaya, the Hurricanes are looking to earn a berth in the College Football Playoffs. The Seminoles are all but out of the running for the playoffs after two losses including a 43 point defeat to the Cardinals. Is Jimbo Fisher on the hot seat? Finishing with a five loss season may bring the heat.
